ASBP as a Programme
ASBP is first and foremost a programme entity in the sense that it is made up of a set of components and activities which have been proposed to be followed in order to reach a set of outputs. In that sense, it traverses the entire gamut of the seed industry, starting from genetics and germplasm issues through research and variety development, to seed production and processing and ending in marketing and utilization.
The components of ASBP recognize the major issues at stake in the seed industry in Africa. The foreseen outputs to be realized from addressing the components hold the potential to overcoming the inequities in Africa’s seed industry. Consequently the recommended activities form the outline of projects to be undertaken to attain the output goals. It will be the responsibility of the ASBP management structures made up of the Steering Committee, Technical Committee and the Programme Coordinator, acting in consultation with AU, regional and national partners, to prescribe and authorize the large number of projects which will be fielded at continental, regional and national levels in implementing ASBP as a programme. The first set of projects will emanate from the 11 project profiles which have already been approved through expert consultation.
